# Fencing in Cardiff & NewportSet In ProperlySo It Survives the Winter
Fences fail at the posts, not the panels. We dig proper post holes, concrete them in and set the line straight, so your boundary is still standing after the next February gale.

## Fencing, What's Involved
We install close-board and panel fencing, gates, posts and boundary repairs across Cardiff, Newport and the surrounding area.

Almost every failed fence in South Wales failed at ground level: posts sunk too shallow, rammed in with soil instead of concrete, or timber sitting in wet ground with no gravel board to protect it.

So that is where we put the effort, correct hole depth, concreted posts, gravel boards keeping timber clear of the soil, and a straight line set out before anything is fixed.

Who it's forHomeowners with a leaning, gappy or storm-damaged boundary, gardens needing privacy or security, and new patios or driveways that need the boundary finished to match.

When it's neededAfter a storm, when posts rock in the ground, when panels have rotted at the base, or when you want a garden made private, secure or dog-proof.

Why a professional job mattersWind load on a fence is substantial. Post depth, spacing, concrete and the way the fence is set against slopes and levels decide whether it holds, and boundary lines need getting right before anything is dug.

## What Happens If It's Left
Nothing outside a house gets cheaper to fix by waiting. Here is how this one escalates.

### One failed post takes the run with it
A rocking post loads the panels either side. The next gale takes several bays instead of one.

### Timber in wet soil rots from the bottom
Without a gravel board or concrete post, the base of a fence sits in damp ground and rots out within a few years.

### A gappy boundary is an open invitation
Missing panels mean no privacy, no security and, if you have a dog, no containment.

### Emergency replacement costs more
Scrambling to replace a collapsed fence in the middle of winter is always dearer than replacing a tired one on your own schedule.

### Common mistakes we're called in to undo

- Setting posts too shallow or backfilling with soil rather than concrete.
- Fitting panels straight down to soil level with no gravel board.
- Using undersized posts for the panel height and exposure.
- Guessing the boundary line instead of agreeing it with the neighbour.
- Leaving a damaged section standing until the whole run comes down.

## Our Process
The same five steps on every job, so you always know what happens next.

01

### Site visit
We walk the boundary, check levels, access and ground conditions, and agree the line and the height with you.

02

### Fixed price in writing
A free, no-obligation quote covering removal and disposal of the old fence, posts, panels or boards, gravel boards, gates and concrete.

03

### Clearance and post setting
Old fencing taken down and removed, post positions set out on a string line, holes dug to depth and posts concreted in plumb.

04

### Panels, boards and gates
Gravel boards fitted, panels hung or close-board built rail by rail, capping fitted and gates hung and adjusted to swing and latch cleanly.

05

### Check and clear
Line and levels checked along the run, all waste removed, ground raked off, and your 10-year workmanship guarantee handed over.

## What You Get

### Posts that hold
Dug to depth and concreted in, so the fence stands up to South Wales wind.

### Timber kept out of the ground
Gravel boards and correct detailing stop the base rotting out first.

### Straight, level lines
Set out on a string line and stepped or raked properly on sloping ground.

### Privacy and security
A solid boundary at the height you want, with gates that actually latch.

### Old fence taken away
Removal and disposal included in the quoted price.

### Fixed price and guaranteed
One written figure, backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee and full insurance.

## Fencing in Detail
Materials, methods and the variations we cover across Cardiff, Newport and the wider South Wales area.

### Close-board fencing
Built on site from posts, arris rails and feather-edge boards. Stronger and longer-lasting than panels, easily repaired board by board, and the better choice on exposed boundaries.

### Panel fencing
Lap, overlap and slatted panels for quicker, more economical runs, hung between timber or concrete posts with gravel boards underneath.

### Posts and fixings
Timber posts concreted in, or concrete posts with slotted gravel boards where maximum life matters and the look allows it. Post depth and spacing are set by panel height and how exposed the boundary is.

### Gates
Side gates, double gates and driveway gates, hung on the correct ironmongery with a braced frame so they do not drop and drag within a season.

### Sloping ground and levels
On a slope a fence is either stepped or raked. We set this out before digging so the run looks deliberate rather than patched.

### Repairs and finishing the garden
Replacing individual posts, boards or bays where the rest of the run is sound, and because we also build patios, driveways and groundworks, the boundary can be done as part of the whole garden.

### Where we carry out this work
We work from Crumlin Drive in St Mellons across Cardiff, Newport, St Mellons, Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly, Penarth and the surrounding South Wales area. See the areas we cover, browse all of our services or head back to the MB Construction homepage.

## Fencing, Common Questions
How much does a new fence cost?It depends on the length, the height, the type of fence and the ground conditions. We measure the run on site and give you a free fixed written price.

How long does fencing take? Most domestic runs are completed within a day or two, with post concrete left to set before panels are loaded. Your quote confirms the schedule.

Do you remove the old fence?Yes. Taking down and disposing of the old fence is included in the quoted price.

How high can I build a fence?Boundary fences are generally limited to two metres, and lower next to a highway. We will flag anything that looks like it needs permission before work is booked.

Who owns the boundary? That is between you and your neighbour and is usually shown on your deeds. We would always recommend agreeing the line before we start.

Can you repair just part of the fence?Yes. If most of the run is sound we will replace the failed posts or bays rather than sell you a whole new fence.

Is the work guaranteed? Our workmanship carries a 10-year guarantee and we are fully insured.

Are your quotes really free?Yes. We come out, look at the job properly and put a fixed price in writing. There is no charge for the visit and no obligation to go ahead.

Do you charge a day rate? No. Every job is quoted as a fixed price. The figure you agree is the figure you pay, whether the work runs quicker or slower than we expected.

Is the work guaranteed and are you insured? All of our work carries a 10-year workmanship guarantee, and we hold both public liability and employer's liability insurance. Ask to see the documents before work starts and you will get them.

Which areas do you cover? We are based on Crumlin Drive in St Mellons and work across Cardiff, Newport, the Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly, Penarth and the surrounding South Wales area.
